Cannon has a long heritage in transport and distribution and was originally founded in the early 1900’s. From humble beginnings grew a successful transport business, delivering the best possible service at the most competitive price. This combination, together with a focus on efficiency, has continued to drive the business forward for more than a century.
During the 1960’s, Cannon developed a range of transport and packing solutions for the fast-growing automotive industry, which was seeking to improve business performance and customer service.
In the mid 1990’s, a complete restructure of the business brought all the services and companies into the Cannon Group. The company then purchased and developed a new purpose built facility on Milton Park, to provide over 100,000 ft2 of storage, together with modern office facilities to house all administration staff and systems. Once the services had been fully integrated into the new structure, a major investment in technology and training began.
In the late 1990’s, demand for next-day national deliveries saw the development of a Northern warehouse, based in Knottingley. This new facility provided 50,000 ft2 of warehousing to be used as a hub for nationwide next day deliveries and provide stronger links to Europe.
The business now offers a comprehensive range of contract packing solutions, allowing it to manage the complete logistics chain direct to the end user. Growth in just in time manufacturing and logistics, combined with growth in demand for outsourcing has allowed the business to deliver success to a range of industries, including white goods, lubricants, paper, construction, technology and aftermarket parts.
As the company geared up for the millennium, it announced a major investment in IT systems and the formation of a new IT department, as it brought together a host of disparate systems. During 2000, it successfully implemented a fully integrated management system to further improve business efficiency and enhance the value of its services.
This investment continues to drive forward services and has gained Cannon an enviable reputation as a technology leader in its field. Today, the company is underpinned by a fully integrated system, with web enabled reporting for all clients.
